The Met Gala: The Worst Dressed of 2013

This is part two of my best and worst dressed list for the 2013 Met Gala and honestly, some of the people on this list, I did not expect to make it here. Everyone can have a fashion fail once in a while though, so hopefully these stars get it together and come back stronger for their next red carpet event.

Kim Kardashian – Never, ever, EVER, wear a full length floral print dress, when you are that pregnant and when the print looks like it should belong on an “old lady” couch. There are so many other alternatives for maternity wear and Kim should really get a new stylist after this mishap. I can’t even begin to tell you how many “who wore it best” photos have popped up in my news feed, comparing Kim K to a floral print couch, or Homer Simpson in a floral dress… ouch.

Anna Wintour – This is a person I wouldn’t expect to see on a worst dressed list, but come on, her outfit was not up to par with her status in the fashion world. I have so much respect for her and what she has done, but she had a major fashion fail at the Met Gala. Her dress looked like a dress on top of a dress, with the smaller of the two being a floral print and the one underneath being plain white. She didn’t even attempt to go for a punk trend which she could have rocked if she tried.

Gwyneth Paltrow – Gwyneth’s pink shiny dress did not flatter her body at all. It’s a nice colour but everything else about it is not nice, especially the bunching at the seams and all the lumps and bumps you can see because of the fabrics lustre. She should have went with something darker and with a vertical cutout, not a horizontal cut out. Vertical lines make your legs and figure look longer, so always go for that instead of horizontal lines.

Kristen Stewart – Come on Kristen, what were you thinking with this weird red satin and lace body suit. It makes her look heavier than she actually is, and it does not flatter her body in any way. If you’re going to go down the bodysuit path for an outfit, get something that hugs your skin a little tighter, even if you want the exaggerated hips. You can have both, don’t worry. But try to avoid shiny fabrics because they show every flaw and are very unforgiving.

Mary-Kate Olsen – Mary-Kate Olsen had the absolute worst outfit of the night. She looked like she was wearing an old woman’s silk housecoat with a boring navy blue dress. The entire outfit screams “I don’t care what I look like!” and well, it really shows. It’s not even the good kind of bad, it’s just bad. What’s worse is that she is a fashion designer and is semi successful, so I had higher expectations for her outfit, especially on a red carpet.

What do you think? I want to hear from you and get your opinion on the worst and best dressed so leave a quick comment below!

The Met Gala: Stars of the Show

This year at the Met Gala, celebrities from all over showed up for a wonderful night full of socializing, fun and fashion. The Met Gala is an annual ball to mark the opening of the fashion exhibition at the Costume Institute in New York City, and this year’s theme was punk. Since it’s a ball you would expect all sorts of interesting gowns and dresses, but some celebs rocked their looks while others failed horribly. Here is the best dressed for the Met Gala 2013, enjoy!

Taylor Swift – She looked amazing in her J. Mendel cut out dress as she worked the cameras on the red carpet. Out of all the stars there she is one of my favourites because she played with the punk trend a bit but didn’t go overkill with massive amounts of makeup or mile high hair. That’s not her style and she didn’t try to make something work that probably wouldn’t work on her. Instead, she went simple but elegant and also edgy in her black and gold lace cutout, partly sheer J. Mendel dress. I give her a 10/10 for this event, she killed it.

Anne Hathaway – As some of you may know, Anne Hathaway was on my worst dressed list for the Oscars, but since then it appears she hired a new stylist, or her original one got their act together. Anne looks like a punk bombshell and I adore her entire look from the vintage Valentino to the fresh blond locks. The black Valentino contrasts nicely against her skin and the shredded pattern on the dress looks amazing on her figure. She is my favourite for the night and gets a 10/10 from me.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – Rosie had an unusual look at this year’s Met Gala, but I thought it was interesting and also a pretty cool look. She wore a deep golden-olive Gucci dress that cut away from her breasts to expose her mid-section and show part of her amazing body. I also like how the dress has lace half sleeves and a feather like texture at the neckline. This isn’t a look that many can pull off but I think she did a good job, especially since she kept the makeup and hair a bit more on the simple side, and I would give her an 8/10.

Madonna – When it comes to Madonna, anything goes. She has made a career out of her talent and out of shocking people, so why stop now? She went for it at the Met Gala where she attended without pants or a skirt, and got a lot of attention for it. She wore a grey studded tartan jacket, a fishnet body stocking, and pink suede stilettos by Casadei. She even went as far as hanging a crucifix right below her rear which was noticed by everyone, especially the media. This look works for her simply because she’s Madonna and doesn’t care about what anyone thinks of her. She does what she wants to do and owns it, just like any true icon can do. She definitely gets a 10/10 from me and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Blake Lively – I’ve always been a fan of Blake since Gossip Girl first aired, and her outfits both on and off the show never fail to impress. She is one of the most glamorous women I know of and she is someone who can launch any budding designer’s career. She wore a Gucci gown to the event and it was very glamorous, fun and slightly edgy. I like the colour blocking between the top and bottom of the dress, and I also really like how the fabric looks feathery and light. The lack of straps to hold up the dress is also a plus in my opinion, because it doesn’t add any distracting lines to the free flowing form of the dress. Blake gets a 9/10 from me for this look, and I hope she keeps up the good work.

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.

Every year I see people wearing florals for spring and honestly it’s becoming such a dull and overused trend. It’s in the magazines, sometimes on runways and always in big retail stores and some smaller boutiques. It can look nice but it rarely does, and so many people go way over the top and look like a walking greenhouse. You don’t want to become a walking greenhouse, so I’m going to give you some tips on how to wear florals without going overkill.

This may sound really simple because it is, but all you really need to do is pick ONE item to wear that has florals. You can pick a nice bag, a pair of pants, even a maxi dress if you insist (just try to avoid super obnoxious patterns), but stick with one single item. Shoes are the exception to this because if the colours match or complement one another you could pair floral print shoes with a nice top or bag. I wouldn’t put floral shoes and floral pants together though because you need something to break up the print, otherwise it looks bad 9 times out of 10.

One other simple thing to keep in mind is just pick a nice print. It can be bright and bold, or more subtle and muted, but make sure you love it and can own it if anyone questions why you are wearing it. Also avoid obnoxious prints and by that I mean prints that are very large and aren’t nice colours. No one should be walking around wearing french mustard yellow and olive green in the same print, ever.

Below I attached some photos of pieces that would be great to pair with a lot of other items you may already own. I would just try to avoid a lot of black or other dark colours because they don’t fit well with spring. You can buy these items from topshop.com – just enter “floral” in the search bar and browse through the items.

Look – A – Like : Rebecca Reed VS. Miley Cyrus

JRW Beauty decided to do another look a like photo shoot! One of our stunning models, Rebecca Reed, approached us with the idea of recreating the controversial Vanity Fair cover featuring Miley Cyrus. We instantly fell in love with the concept and this is what we came up with. What do you think?

UNBOUND13

The JRW team are proud to pronounce that UNBOUND13 was extraordinary. This year’s show had such an array of beautiful, creative pieces which truly inspired us all. Here are a few pictures of these astounding pieces.

Dolce & Gabbana Come to Canada!

Dolce & Gabbana are finally coming to Canada, and I couldn’t be happier! They decided to open a free standing North American store in Toronto, the 6th city in North America to have one. The store is still being renovated but it already looks amazing and it’s right on Bloor Street West, along with all the other high end stores that I dream about.

I’m really excited about this because I’ve been a fan of Dolce & Gabbana FOREVER. They are part of the reason I want to be a fashion designer myself. I live for glamour and beauty and that’s exactly what you get when you wear their clothing. You feel like a million bucks!

Once the store opens it will carry full mens and womens collections, as well as accessories and shoes. The store alone looks amazing, and I cannot wait to see what’s inside of it once it opens. I know I’m going there, who else?! Get your classy on ladies and gentlemen!

Charlotte Free – The Next “It” Model

Charlotte Free is breaking all the rules and writing her own as she quickly climbs the ranks to become the next “it” model. She’s young, has wild pink/blonde hair and has a very unique style. Her personality is just as wild as her hair, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind and show it.

Her wild child attitude is why I love her so much. More people, especially women, need to just be themselves and stop trying to conform to what society wants them to be. Be a free spirit! Who cares what everyone else thinks? It’s your life so go ahead and own it! Kudos to Charlotte and anyone else who is bold enough to live like a free spirit, I love those kinds of people.

Charlotte has recently landed ad campaigns with Rihanna for River Island and H&M S/S 2013, commercials for Maybelline and even the cover of Flare magazine. She is definitely a model worth following because even though she is a wild child, she’s making a name for herself as she rocks the runways, works the camera and owns her style.

Fashion Find – “China” Dress

While looking through a few fashion magazines I found this amazing dress, but it had no name or “where to buy”, or any way to find it. Luckily for me (and you!), I found it while browsing around the internet! This dress reminds me of the fancy china with really cool and intricate blue designs painted on them. You can get this dress and others pieces like it from stores that carry the Roberto Cavalli 2013 resort collection, and remember ladies, no matter how you wear it stay classy!

To make it easy for you, I posted the link to buy the dress in the photo’s description. You can also find other pieces from the Roberto Cavalli 2013 resort collection on the website. Enjoy!

Let’s Get Down and Dirty in Denim!

This spring, denim is trending and it’s everywhere. From runways to street wear, you can’t go a day without seeing denim… unless maybe you live under a rock. You can get denim in all colours and styles, so why go with basic blue? Denim is even printed so it doesn’t look like denim, and instead has all sorts of cool designs splashed across it.

If you really want to own this trend, I wouldn’t go the typical route and wear basic blue denim. Go for something bold and stylish, like J Brand denim jeans, and pair it with chic white Jeffrey Campbell shoes, a Jason Wu white and black sleeveless blouse, and a blue turquoise Balenciaga bag. This is a look that will make you look and feel sexy, and who doesn’t love that?! No matter how you decide to own this trend remember ladies, stay classy!

Oscar Style: The Not So Sexy Starlets

Here’s part two of my style blog for the Oscar Awards. Here I will focus on the worst dressed and what the stars should have done differently to save their outfits from getting on this list. While some of the changes here are simple, some are total outfit fails so whenever you’re going out, keep in mind what you’re about to read here. You don’t want to hear gasps of shock and horror when you walk into the room; instead you want everyone to be awestruck by your beauty!

Here are my worst 5 dressed at the Oscar Awards!

Anne Hathaway usually looks amazing even when she isn’t trying, especially with her new sexy short hair, but her outfit at the Oscars was a TOTAL miss. It looks like the first draft of what could have been a really amazing dress. The fit was off, it wasn’t cut correctly (just look at the seam lines over her breasts), and it looks like it’s bunched up where the seams are. The colour of it was even off and it washed out her beautiful complexion. This dress was not Oscar worthy, and she should have worn something that didn’t look like a first year fashion student made it. A nice darker silver/grey, silk dress with a similar silhouette would have been perfect for her.

Brandi Glanville has a nice dress but she wore it way too low. Her dress was a nip slip waiting to happen, but luckily for her no such incident occurred. If she would have pulled it up a bit and covered her breasts a bit more, the look would have went from trashy to classy just like that *snaps fingers*. Next time she should opt in for a dress with a less revealing neckline, or add something to cover up a little bit. You always want to be classy ladies, never trashy!

Helena Bonham Carter’s look was an absolute fail. Nothing about this look worked at all, and it looked like she was getting ready to go out to a Halloween party. Her hair was unbrushed and messy (not in a good, sexy way either), and the star hairclips didn’t help. The dress was even worse. It looks like something an old witch would wear and it is very unflattering to her figure. If I was her stylist I would have gave her a clean, curly updo instead of having hair hanging in her face, and I would have definitely avoided the star hairclips. I would have also put her in something that hugged her curves a bit and didn’t have cascading ruffles of black, grey and white. It’s very hard to pull of ruffles and multiple colours, especially with semi-transparent fabric. I hope her next event has a better outcome for her appearance.

Kristen Stewart has had her fair share of fashion hits and misses, and this look was a big miss. When I first saw her all I could think was “she’s a human rectangle”. The dress did nothing for her curves, and it added too many pounds to too many places. The fluffy effect from the fabric at the bottom of the dress didn’t look good either. She should have stuck with a dress in a similar colour to the one she had, but she should have gone with one that wasn’t bulky and lacy. The thickness of the lace bunches up too much and ruins the allure of most lace dresses. Next time she should stick to either thinner, curve hugging lace or skip lace all together and get something that drapes nicely and flows around her body.

Melissa McCarthy had a nice dress but it hugged her in all the wrong places. I LOVE when plus sized women go out rocking every inch of their perfect looks in public, but this dress did not do that for her! It hugged her in the wrong places and bunched up too much around her hips and arms. If the dress would have been pulled in a little more around her waist and not right on her hips, and if the dress wouldn’t have been clipped together on her left hip bone, it would have looked better. Having it bunch up a little around her waist and then flow smoothly down and past her hips could have changed the look, and the addition of a bright belt would have been perfect.

That’s the end of my list but now I want to hear what you think! Do you agree with my list and if not, why? Tell me in the comments, can’t wait to hear from you!
